Animation Unplugged: flip books & optical toys

This family-friendly introduction to animation takes your imagination from sketch to screen using applied principles of storytelling, movement, transformation and metamorphosis.  Design and create flip books and other optical toys then watch your creation move across and off the page and onto the screen!

Through hands-on activities, our programs invite students of all ages to become “media savvy” in more than one way: they produce their own video and animation work and develop the critical-thinking skills required to navigate the globalized, 24-hour media landscape of the twenty-first century.

Commercials & PSA’s: What’s Your Message?

An introduction to the fundamental techniques of media messaging and video production through examination, development and production of commercials and Public Service Announcements (PSA’s).   Participants develop skills essential in the recognition and creation of precise and effective messaging in mass media through critical discussion, group projects and a personal on-screen proclamation.

My students’ sometimes-silly, always-insightful projects forge practices and partnerships that carry far further than the final screenings. Students are challenged in risk-taking roles and group exercises which forge confidence and self-assuredness in student growth, learning and accomplishment. These skills transfer not only to future video projects but in life.
